The current framework of higher education in Portugal together with an increasing and pressing need for quality of research forms the basis for the development of structured research units.  This understands greater lines of research, self-development and dissemination of scientific work of recognised merit, that is, published in international journals. These units should essentially focus on mass critical building in specific fields of knowledge.

The Centre for Advanced Studies in Economics and Econometrics (CASEE) represents an important project with the aim of promoting research work and discussion on economic and social issues of important concern and interest, currently affecting economies. CASEE is involved in the development of research of theoretical and applied nature directed at the international scientific community and decision makers, providing support for planning and decision-making processes at the national and international level.

Important objectives expected in the foreseeable future include:

  • Achieving excellence in scientific research;
  • Developing and exploring the links between research and economic decision-support policies;
  • Developing research on central economic issues;
  • Building a strong reputation as a partner in international research networks;
  • Encouraging a forum for exchange and international scientific and inter-university cooperation;
  • Training young researchers in central areas of research, ensuring continuity and dissemination of scientific knowledge in professional fields of knowledge circles of relief, for both the public and private sectors,
  • Analysing the higher education system (three-cycle system) in Portugal.

Knowledge building and transfer between researchers from other research centres/institutions also represent an important objective for the development of partnerships and joint networks in common areas of research.

Various platforms for the dissemination of developing research work include:

  • Publication of articles in international journals;
  • Organisation of conferences and workshops and other initiatives;
  • Website;
  • Working paper series (online);
  • Organisation of short intensive courses (season courses).
