The current framework of higher education in Portugal together with an increasing and pressing need for quality of research forms the basis for the development of structured research units. This understands greater lines of research, self-development and dissemination of scientific work of recognised merit, that is, published in international journals. These units should essentially focus on mass critical building in specific fields of knowledge. The Centre for Advanced Studies in Economics and Econometrics (CASEE) represents an important project with the aim of promoting research work and discussion on economic and social issues of important concern and interest, currently affecting economies. CASEE is involved in the development of research of theoretical and applied nature directed at the international scientific community and decision makers, providing support for planning and decision-making processes at the national and international level. Important objectives expected in the foreseeable future include:
